Important Collector’s Wristwatches, Pocket Watches, Clocks and Horological Tools
Saturday November 15 and Sunday November 16, 2008
Grand Hotel Kempinski, Geneva
Exceptional pocket watches made for the Chinese market and Tourbillons to be offered in Antiquorum’s November sale
Geneva, October 6, 2008 - Antiquorum, the world’s leading watch auctioneer, is proud to present their November sale of ‘Important Collector’s Wristwatches, Pocket Watches, Clocks and Horological Tools’ to be held at the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva, November 15 & 16, 2008. The sale comprises about 650 timepieces including a private collection of nine exceptional and rare enameled pocket watches made specifically for the Chinese market - including one of the most important watches ever made for this market - featured in a separate catalogue entitled ‘Imperial Treasures’.
The two star pieces of this collection are the magnificent gold and enamel automaton pocket watch made circa 1810 and a mirror image pair of enamel pocket watches given by King George III to Chinese Emperor Jiaqing in 1816.
Other highlights of the sale are a Patek Philippe ‘Grande Complication’, Ref. 959 in 18K gold, and a Ref. 2497 in pink gold, estimated at SFr. 400,000-600,000. Also by Patek Philippe, a very rare oversized pink gold wristwatch, Ref. 530, is estimated at Sfr. 180,000-280,000. Several pocket chronometers with Tourbillon will also be presented at this auction, including a Glashütte one-minute flying Helwig-type Tourbillon chronometer that is estimated at SFr. 200,000-250,000.
With an important provenance is the ‘Oyster Perpetual, Officially Certified Chronometer’, Ref. 3372, that was given by Rolex to General Guisan on August 20, 1945.
Again for Rolex enthusiasts, a Daytona stainless steel chronograph, Ref. 6264, with pulsation scale, is estimated at SFr. 150,000- 200,000. There is also a Comex, Ref. 5514, made by Rolex in 1977 for the Comex diving company.
The Chapiro collection is certain to attract attention as it is a very interesting private collection of pocket watches, most of which are French and present a large spectrum of rare escapements from the 17th to the 20th century.
The watches will be shown in Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Geneva. |

About Antiquorum
Antiquorum is unquestionably the world’s leading watch auctioneer; of the 62 watches ever sold publicly by major auction houses above SFR. 1,000,000, Antiquorum claims an impressive 44. In 2002, Antiquorum established the all-time world record price for a wristwatch at auction when it sold a platinum Patek Philippe World Time Ref. 1415 from 1939 for an astounding CHF 6,603,500 (US$ 4,026,524). This record-breaking price more than doubled the previous world record price for a wristwatch at auction. Another record price for a modern watch was achieved in 2004, the unique white gold Calibre 89, also by Patek Philippe, was sold for SFr. 6,603,500 (US$ 5,002,652). |
