Antiquorum Watch Experts Favorite Timepieces from Arman Collection to be Offered in March 10th & 11th Auction

March 2, 2010 - Antiquorum Auctioneers is excited to offer a diverse and superb private collection of 119 timepieces that belonged to the internationally recognized artist Arman in its March 10th & 11th sale of "Important Collectors' Wristwatches, Pocket Watches & Clocks" in New York City.

"Since 'The Arman Collection' is a comprehensive collection that includes timepieces at every price level, it offers a rare opportunity for one and all to acquire a watch that was chosen by and belonged to a celebrated twentieth century artist," said, Evan S. Zimmermann, President & CEO, Antiquorum.

A French born American artist, Arman (1928 - 2005) is internationally recognized as a major contributor to late 20th century art. A main protagonist of the "Nouveau Rèalisme" School (parallel to the American Pop Art movement), Arman is particularly well-known for his "accumulations", the use of everyday objects as subject. This concept is expressed in a range of media and materials from monumental sculptures to paintings to small gold and silver pieces designed to be worn as jewelry. Arman's work is represented in major museums and in private and public collections around the globe such as the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, France; the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum in New York; and The Tel Aviv Museum in Israel.

Below, Antiquorum experts weigh in on their favorite timepieces from "The Arman Collection" and why:

Julien Schaerer, Auctioneer & Watch Director, Antiquorum USA

Patek Philippe Ref. 2459 Devil's Horns - Lot 464
"A real Patek Philippe collectors dream. An exceedingly rare reference that was produced in 2 different case designs but bearing the same reference number. This happens to be the amazing and dramatic devils horns design combined with a beautiful textured black dial confirmed by the extract from the archives. Reminiscent of some of the best designs by Gilbert Albert, this has to be one of the rarest and most flamboyant designed cases to appear at auction in over 10 years."
Estimate: $ 25,000 - $ 35,000

Charles Tearle, Watch Expert & Director, Antiquorum USA

Minerva, Oversize Split-Second Chronograph - Lot 392
"This Minerva is one of most stunning vintage watches I have seen. Made in the 1930's, it has a large but wearable 42 mm classic designed case with a split-second chronograph. This case size with split-second complication are rare from the era and combined I feel they give it an elegant yet also sports oriented look. Perfect for today's lifestyle. Although not a mainstream manufacture, Minerva specialized in chronographs and was the timekeeper for the 1936 Winter Olympics. Of course I also love the provenance."
Estimate: $ 6,000 - $ 8,000

Courtney Carter, Junior Watch Expert, Antiquorum USA

Vacheron & Constantin Ref. 3681 Black Mystery - Lot 404
"This is my favorite watch in the Arman collection. Made in the late 1940's, the "Mystery" is one of the most surprising designs by Vacheron Constantin. The black dial and unusual rotating center plate set this watch apart from contemporary watches produced today. Its whimsical yet modernistic design makes this an interesting piece for vintage collectors. I think this watch is a great piece for a woman considering its 30mm case size."
Estimate: $ 6,000 - $8,000
