Antiquorum Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces Auction to be held in Hong Kong on October 23

For Immediate Release

Oct. 3, 2011

Antiquorum Important Modern ...

Antiquorum is pleased to present its upcoming "Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces" auction to be held on Sunday, October 23 at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. The preview will be held at Antiquorum Auctioneers' showroom in Hong Kong from Thursday, October 20 to Saturday, October 22. Collectors and horological enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting autumn sale encompassing 384 carefully selected timepieces.

The highlight of the auction is "La Colère d'Achille", an ivory fan features nine five-clawed dragons set with a watch (Lot 379), which was a gift given to the Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) of the Qing Dynasty by George III of the United Kingdom. The unique and magnificent fan was attributed to James Cox, the master of luxurious jewellery and timepieces in England. The 20K gold, silver, ivory, enamel, diamond, ruby, emerald and agate set fan with a watch was made circa late 18 century, and was given by the Ambassador of England to the Emperor Qianlong as a gift to celebrate his 80th birthday in 1792. The ivory fan, when open and closed, forms a total of nine five-clawed flying dragons, which embodies the supreme sovereignty of the Chinese Emperor. The end of the fan handle contains a small watch made of gold and blue enamel and a compartment for storage. The paper leaf is painted with a scene adapted from a painting of a quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon in the Trojan War. The fan was sold to Lord Sandberg at 250,000CHF in the Antiquorum October 1984 Geneva auction.

Estimate: HKD1,100,000 - 1,500,000

Another highlight of the sale that should not be overlooked is "The Theatre", a rare 18K yellow gold and enamel quarter-repeating musical watch with two erotic automaton scenes. This watch is undoubtedly the work of the exceptional Geneva watchmaker Henry Capt, which is one of the eight known examples made by the master, made circa 1815. This lot was first sold at Antiquorum's "The Private Collection of Theodor Beyer" auction held in Zurich, Switzerland in November, 2003. Lot 159

Estimate: HKD1,200,000 - 1,800,000

Another exceptional timepiece being offered is "The Evening", a 18K gold, enamel and pearl set watch made circa 1800 for the Chinese market. The oval-shaped case and movement are rare to be found, while the fine enamel painting was possibly by the renowned enameller Lissignol, Jean Abraham (1749 - 1819). This lot was in the Lord Sandberg collection before 2001, and the same watch is in the collection of Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. Lot 376

Estimate: HKD700,000 - 900,000

In this autumn sale, Antiquorum experts are delighted to present the exceptional and highly important, large, 18K gold minute-repeating pocket chronometer with one-minute tourbillion regulator and spilt-seconds chronograph. Entered in stock 1898, this lot was specially ordered by J. Pierpont Morgan and given to P.M.H. (probably the grandson of J. Pierpont Morgan) in 1913. Lot 315

Estimate: HKD1,000,000 - 1,500,000

Patel Philippe fans will want to bid on the Patek Phlippe "6 Complications", an 18K yellow gold minute-repeating keyless pocket watch with perpetual calendar, phases and age of the moon. Made in 1915 and sold on August 28th, 1916, this extremely fine and very rare watch is accompanied by the Extract from the Archives. Lot 320

Estimate: HKD1,080,000 - 1,520,000

With collectors' increasing interest in Patek Philippe timepieces, we are pleased to offer a collection of Patek Philippe luxury modern wristwatches in this sale, among which Patek Philippe Ref. 3939HP is undoubtedly the most remarkable lot. This very fine and rare, minute-repeating platinum wristwatch with one-minute tourbillon regulator and a platinum Patek Philippe buckle was sold in November, 2004. Accompanied by a fitted box, Certificate of Origin, COSC certificate and an additional case back. Lot 384

Estimate: HKD2,850,000 - 3,250,000

Patek Philippe 5004P, a platinum wristwatch with split-seconds chronograph. This very rare and important, water-resistant wristwatch features perpetual calendar, moon phases, leap year, 24 hour indication and a platinum Patek Philippe deployant clasp. Made in 2008 and sold on 5th November, 2008.
