Rolex and Gem-Set Watches Underscore Antiquorum’s July Auction in Hong Kong

July 12, 2016, Hong Kong– Antiquorum’s Hong Kong auction of “Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces” held on Saturday, July 9 at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, concluded with an outstanding result totaling HKD$ 56,365,625. The sale of 490 fine and highly collectible timepieces attracted a standing room only crowd. Spirited bidding came from all corners of the world including from China, Hong Kong, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, as well as Switzerland.

Highlighting the sale was the Rolex Ref. 6036 “Jean Claude Killy” Chronograph in Pink Gold. After minutes of intense bidding, the extremely rare and collectible vintage Rolex with triple date calendar sold to an online bidder for HKD$2,670,000.

Rolex continues to be in great demand by collectors worldwide. The Rolex Ref. 6241 Paul Newman Daytona 14K Yellow Gold drew considerable attention and attained HKD 2,250,000; while The Rolex Ref. 5513 Military Submariner Steel Wristwatch inspired fierce competition and ultimately sold for an impressive HKD 1,086,000. The Rolex Ref. 6239 Paul Newman Daytona in steel also achieved a significant result, selling for HKD 834,000.

“We noticed particularly aggressive bidding from collectors in the room and on the internet for exceptional Rolex examples offered in the auction,” said Evan Zimmermann, President & CEO, Antiquorum Auctioneers. “We were especially impressed by the remarkable result for the Rolex Ref. 6036 Jean Claude Killy in today’s sale.”

Gem-set wristwatches realized spectacular prices in the sale. The Franck Muller Calibre 97, Grande and Petite Sonnerie Minute Repeater Platinum and Diamond Wristwatch was highly sought-after by collectors and sold for HKD 1,590,000; while the Chopard Ref. 4250 Imperiale Tourbillon Baguette Diamond Wristwatch with Matching Ring, Cufflinks and Ballpoint Pen fetched HKD 1,518,000.

“We were pleased to see highly competitive bidding for the gem-set timepieces presented in our July auction,” said Julien Schaerer, Auctioneer and Managing Director of Antiquorum Geneva. “The rare and beautifully set diamond wristwatches appealed to both watch and jewelry enthusiasts across the globe resulting in impressive prices at the top end of their estimates.”

Rolex Ref 6036 “Jean Claude Killy” Chronograph in Pink gold. It is recognized only 170 examples of the REF. 6036 were produced in yellow gold and 144 in pink gold. It is one of Rolex 's rarest complications in original condition within a pink gold case. This example is in excellent overall condition the case retains strong hallmarks and light oxidation to the gold around the calendar adjusters from prolonged storage. Rolex Ref 6241, 14K gold Daytona “Paul Newman”. Made in 1969, it is a very rare 14K yellow gold wristwatch with round button chronograph, registers, tachometer, anti-reflect black bezel and a 14K yellow gold riveted Rolex Oyster bracelet with deployant clasp.

Made in 2007, sold January 7th , 2008, it is a very fine and rare , tonneau-shaped and curved , 18K pink gold wristwatch with square button split-seconds chronograph , register , tachometer, torque indicator, power reserve and 18K pink gold and titanium Richard Mille double deployant clasp.

Rolex Ref. 5513 Military Submariner in steel. Made circa 1972 and issued to the British Royal Navy in 1974, this is a very rare hacking center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel military diver’s wristwatch with fixed bar lugs. This example with original configuration that retains its correct hands, dial, bezel and case-back is very rare to find and is referred to as a “Full Spec” example.
